5.12.09 Greater Portland High School Counselor Reception

The UO Office of Admissions hosts greater Portland high school counselors during our annual spring dinner and reception. The event takes place every year to update the area’s high school counselors on admission changes and to provide some information on the incoming freshman class for the new school year. It’s also UO’s “thank you” to these counselors for their hard work.

Robert L. Tsai is professor of law at American University, Washington College of Law. He is a prize-winning essayist on constitutional law and history. Please join us as Professor Tsai discusses his new book, Eloquence and Reason: Creating a First Amendment Culture. In his book, Professor Tsai examines how language, especially the language of lawyers, judges, and legal activists, has made the First Amendment into an instrument for social progress and a facilitator of a common language of rights. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event.

A one-day workshop that addressed the challenges, patterns and solution strategies in forming public-private partnerships for improving the economy and the environment, created for managers in government and the private sector.

This workshop taught participants strategies for forming successful public-private partnerships to achieve alignment with the people “over the fence.”

5.6.09 Fiction Writing Workshop

This eight-week, non-credit class focused on the principles of literary craft, including voice, tension, character, description, dialogue and narrative arc. The students presented one original short story per meeting, read published stories, and discussed ways to foster a daily commitment to reading and writing.

5.6.09 Lecture: Anne Whiston Sprin

Anne Whiston Spirn is a professor of landscape architecture and planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the author of three books: The Granite Garden; The Language of Landscape; and, most recently, Daring to Look: Dorothea Lange’s Photographs and Reports from the Field. She is an award-winning author and distinguished landscape architect, photographer, teacher, and scholar. Her work is devoted to promoting life-sustaining communities: places that are functional, sustainable, meaningful, and artful, places that help people feel and understand the relationship of the natural and built worlds. Her subject this evening was the photography and field reports of Dorothea Lange.

5.2.09 Phil Elverum and Daniel Menche in concert

A concert and conversation, cosponsored by the Regional Arts and Culture Council, the back room, and UO Cultural Forum. Phil Elverum premiered his new piece, a composition called “White Stag,” commissioned and prepared by the UO Publication Studio. He was joined by Portland musician Daniel Menche, presenting a film and new music made with the sounds of the Columbia River Gorge. Matthew Stadler, director of the Publication Studio, spoke with them both about their projects.
